Santacons Around The World
Even though we are focusing on NYC’s huge event, I think it is important that people get to see a large variety of images from Santacons around the world. In the weeks following the annual event, I put out requests to a ton of people on youtube, flickr, and vimeo. Everybody who responded was really positive and will receive credit in the film for their contributions. I just wanted to give a...
Equipment Used For Filming
For anybody who is interested, I wanted to give a quick overview of some of the equipment we used for the shoot.
More or less, everything was filmed on a Canon T2i. It is Canon’s mid-level DSLR and it was FANTASTIC for our type of project. Full HD video at 1080i. Switching between a 8 gig and 16 gig SD Card, we were able to record a little over an hour of video before needing to dump it...

"Santas On The Move" Release Date
First off, I have to apologize to everyone. When planning for the release of the film, I never imagined how much it would take to edit the thing down to 20 - 25 minutes. Santacon took place on December 11th, and Christmas was two weeks later. Someone working around the clock might have been able to do it, but I doubt it.
Everyone working on this have volunteered their time, and I cannot thank...
Shayna testing out her Reindeer makeup just a few days before Santacon.
I’m gearing up for Santacon! This is a video of me practicing my makeup to see how much time I need to dedicate to applying it the day of :D! Not really a tutorial, but feel free to copy my technique…Also, try to do it just as fast!
In Laughing Squid... AGAIN!
I have to give a very big shout out to Scott Beale over at Laughing Squid for putting the trailer for our documentary on his site. It was only a few months ago that I was able to get a lot of great background info on the origins of Santacon(archy) from Scott and he even threw the kickstarter drive up on his site.
Now, even without me emailing him, I found that the views of the trailer had...
I give up. All hail Coco.
Sexy Santa Girls Go Wild - For such an audacious title, they didn’t go all that wild in this video or at the actual Con itself.
I Love Arduinos
If you have 30 bucks and a little bit of time, I would highly recommend picking one up. Play around with it and teach yourself how to program it. There were many nights while developing the robot’s circuits when I would hold up a pile of wires to Shayna and be absolutely delighted that I could get a light to blink.
Anyways…
I would like to share what went into the control panel....
I am proud to present the trailer for “Santas On The Move.” It sums up exactly how good a time we had throughout this whole project. I would like to add a special thanks to those we were able to interview and everybody who helped fund us. I hope this little taste can further justify the significance of your donations.

I can’t thank Dan Glass enough for this article. For not only being super nice about everything, and being a seasoned Santacon veteran, but for really getting what we set out to do with this project. Please read, enjoy, tweet, or even digg if you may. It is a great read and you’ve GOT to make it to the end of the article.
The Santabot received some Dino-Damage pretty early on in the day. Within an hour, the candy dish was broken and little did I know the speakers were about to fry. Here is me giving a breakdown of the damage. Sorry for the abrupt ending, we moved onto another topic pretty quickly.

Santacon Survival Guide
For those preparing to attend Santacon this year, the fine folks over at NYC Santacon have posted a survival guide to participating in this year’s event.
Santa’s Survival Guide:
What to expect Santacon is an annual convention for Santa and his holiday brethren. Expect holiday cheer, unconventional gifts, naughty carols and general mayhem. Do not...
Now I find out these exist too! What! At least my fridge box forts in the future will be extremely sturdy.
Santa Bot 2.0 In The Brooklyn Paper →
I was interviewed on Friday for the Brooklyn Paper. You can read the article at the link above, but I love the quote she ended the piece with…
Dressing up is mandatory, although variations on the theme, such as elves or reindeer, are invited. Any Santa is welcome, but Brewer suggests making a bare minimum of effort in the costume department.
“Just showing up in a red sweatshirt and binge...
What A Friday
Not only did I go reserve equipment for next week, but I was also interviewed for the Brooklyn Paper and had my piece go up on KUAC!
You can listen to it HERE (skip to 2:47)
Now back to building and such… this thing is going to be sweet.
Why Did Nobody Tell Me! →
These are little rivets are made for the purpose of joining cardboard boxes together. WHERE WERE THESE WHEN I WAS A KID! Actually, if I knew about these a month ago, I would have used them in the robot. Unfortunately it is a little late for that, but I still wanted to share a cool find.
fairfood40 asked: I love this idea for a project! I found your blog when I was looking up images for SantaCon (I am going to attend my first one in San Francisco this Saturday). So glad you included the picture of Hannukah Harry and said it was fine to dress as other seasonal characters. I am erring on the side of biblical or Dickensonian characters myself.

T-Minus One Month
The panic attacks have started to kick in. I have one month to finish the robot. Right now it is a crazy looking cardboard box, but it is starting to take shape.
As for the film, we have recorded a good batch of interviews over the past week with hopefully more coming this weekend. I swear, once this project is over, I’m just going to nap… for weeks.

Great Short Documentaries

Leading up to the filming of my own short film, I’ve really been on the lookout for great examples of the filmmaking I would like to do. Here are some examples of some work that I really enjoyed.

Santas On The Move - Footage Needed!
We are now a little under six weeks until the New York City Santacon 2010, but I’m putting out a call for footage of your local Santacon. We aren’t looking for a ton of footage, maybe just two or three minutes of cool footage that will be placed into a montage about other Santacons going on around the world.
If interested, please try to stay as close to this as possible so it will gel...
DECEMBER 11TH, 2010
So my guess for the date of NYC’s Santacon was correct. Exactly 2 weeks before Christmas Day, December 11th, the streets will run red with mayhem and Santa suits.
Please check out SantaCon NYC for a countdown clock and other info.
This was sent out to the members of the Facebook group that has almost 3,000 confirmed guests for the event.
Hey Santas! It’s that most magical time of year...
Quick Arduino Update
I just wanted to give everybody a quick update on how the programming of the arduino’s are coming. As of today, the LOL Shield is ready for some great text, the chest control panel has blinking lights, and the candy dish has a servo that will move when a button is pushed!
There are a few other little surprises in there, so unfortunately I won’t be posting pictures of the progress, but...

Welcome Asylum Readers!!! →
Laura Leu (Santacon fan and soon to be interviewee) was kind enough to throw the story onto Asylum.com! For those who have read the story and wish to know more about the project, please look around or go to the Kickstarter page if you are interested in donating. We have surpassed our goal, and any additional funds will go towards renting a small space to build the robot in. (My living room is much...
Here is a test of the LOL Shield that will be installed in the chest. Right now I can only program it to say pretty basic things, but maybe with a little more work it can do some animations too.
We Have Reached Our Goal!
I cannot say enough how much I appreciate everybody who has supported this project. We have surpassed our $2,500 goal to get this thing off the ground. Those who are still interested, we are able to accept donations until October 1st. Every extra dollar will still be put to good use. Even if you weren’t able to throw something at us monetarily, that is alright too, we will need help...
Creative Commons
I’ve put a lot of time into this and we are going to release the film under a Creative Commons. From their website…
Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization
We work to increase the amount of creativity (cultural, educational, and scientific content) in “the commons” — the body of work that is available to the public for free and legal sharing, use, repurposing, and remixing.
